Founded in 1761, Faber-Castell is one of the world’s oldest industrial companies but, remarkably, remains in the hands of the same family, now in its eighth generation. In his workshop in Ansbach, Germany, in 1761, Kaspar Faber started making the first Bleyweissstift pencils. 80 years later, Lothar von Faber stamped the company with the family name, setting standard lengths, diameters and lead grades and, in doing so, made Faber-Castell the first branded writing instrument company in the world. With branches opening in London, New York and Paris, the brand went from strength to strength, launching the legendary Castell 9000 pencil in 1905. Since then, they’ve added a range of fine art and mechanical pencils and fine-writing pens to their portfolio.
There’s a heritage design thread running through the company’s products, which includes the use of wood, resin, leather and metals, but contemporary finishes like chrome plating, 3D-printed thermo-plastic polymers or innovative barrel shapes mean they’re never backward looking.
