Switzerland’s rich history of watch and jewellery making provides the backdrop to Caran d’Ache’s story, but the precision of craftsmanship, design brilliance and precious materials are what make this brand's pens globally revered.
Conceived and still based in Geneva, Caran d’Ache was named after a French cartoonist and comes from ‘karandash’, Russian for pencil. In 1915, Arnold Schweitzer bought the Ecridor Pencil Factory and started manufacturing high quality pencils from the local graphite mined from the Swiss mountains. From the start, exquisite craftsmanship was high on the agenda, with each pen or pencil undergoing a series of rigorous checks before it was deemed fit to bear the Caran d’Ache name. The company prides itself on its strict standards, meaning when you buy a Caran d’Ache writing instrument, you know its quality is guaranteed.
Today, Caran d’Ache match their traditional artisan skills – Chinese lacquer done by hand, the use of noble materials such as platinum, gold, silver, rhodium or wood – with the performance and precision of technology and new materials such as carbon fibre. This makes for a unique historical-meets-futuristic ethos and pens or mechanical pencils that are both visually attractive and practically appealing. Whether its a luxurious, impactful gift such as the elegant Ecridor rendered in gold or silver, or a reliable and stylish everyday ballpoint like the cast-aluminium 849 series, Caran d’Ache always delivers. Still the sole manufacturer of writing instruments in Switzerland, Caran d’Ache takes its Swiss history seriously and retains the original spirit of precision, excellence and design flair to this day.
